How to prepare for campus placements

The first time a student attends an interview to begin their professional career is during campus placements. It is highly recommended that students go fully prepared for these interviews.
Most campus interviews are generally divided into assessments like:
  1. Skill Assessment

In this test, students are evaluated on the technical skills or domains that they are being interviewed for. For example – if you are attending an interview for finance jobs, you will be evaluated on basic concepts of finance, taxation, investments, or accounting.

  3. Group Discussions

Group Discussions are a way for panels to evaluate students on various aspects like communication skills, ability to take initiative, knowledge, and diverse ideas/thoughts. This process is designed to share ideas with other participants and articulate your thoughts in a manner where you are heard by others.

To effectively clear a Group Discussion (GD), it is essential to keep in mind the following key points:

    a) Initiate the discussion:

Take the initiative to start the conversation, as it grabs the attention of the recruiters. Introduce yourself confidently and initiate the discussion on a relevant topic.

    b) Maintain a respectful demeanor:

Avoid being aggressive or argumentative during the discussion. Such behaviour leaves a negative impression on the recruiters and reduces your chances of being selected. Maintain a calm and respectful attitude towards others' opinions.

    c) Provide valid points:

Contribute to the discussion by sharing relevant and logical points. Back up your arguments with supporting evidence or examples. This showcases your critical thinking and analytical skills.

    d) Encourage participation:

Create an inclusive environment by giving opportunities for others to express their opinions. Listen actively and encourage the quieter participants to share their thoughts. Show respect for diverse perspectives. By following these guidelines, you can enhance your performance in a Group Discussion and increase your chances of standing out to recruiters.

  4. Panel Interviews
  5. This involves one-on-one communication with the interviewing panel. This is an important level of discussion since the interview will determine if the student is sent ahead for the process or not. The panel interview will involve a professional discussion between you and the interviewer to determine your job-related skills, your willingness to learn, ability to ask questions, and your ability to apply your knowledge in different scenarios.

Campus Placement Interview Tips:

A few important skills that a student needs to prepare before getting into campus placements are:
  1. Strong Resume:

A strong resume plays a crucial role in securing success during campus placements. It serves as a gateway to opportunities by showcasing a candidate's qualifications, skills, and experiences. A well-crafted resume effectively highlights academic achievements, relevant coursework, internships, extracurricular activities, and any notable projects undertaken. It provides a snapshot of an individual's capabilities and demonstrates their potential value to potential employers. A strong resume not only captures attention but also helps candidates stand out from the competition, leaving a lasting impression on recruiters.

  3. Communicate Clearly

    - Communication is key to clear any level or kind of interview. When you can communicate your thoughts and ideas well, half the battle is won. The panel will be impressed with your articulation skills and will want to evaluate you further on how you will implement your ideas.

  4. Know the Company

Always research the organization you are being interviewed for. Know the basics so that you can talk and discuss the company in your interview rounds. Read about the mission, vision, and values of the organization and understand their business well. Be clear on your motivation factor and how you feel about working for this company.

  5. Be Well Read

You should be aware of any topic that is thrown at you in a group discussion or personal interview so that you can talk about it. This will determine your general knowledge and reading skills.

  6. Be Honest

Be honest in what you write on your CV and when you talk about yourself, your family, internal projects/activities undertaken, and your hobbies. The HR or technical panel would evaluate you on any topic that is mentioned in your profile. You need to be prepared and honest about the same while giving answers. The panel will judge you on ethical grounds and how you as an employee will fit in the value system defined by the organization.
