4 Nutritious Rainy Season Foods

The rainy season has become synonymous with hot chai and bhajiyas. The monsoons are also a time when we need to be extra careful with what we eat to avoid getting sick. During this time of lockdown, we don’t have the option of buying fried snacks from the roadside stall. But this is a good thing because we can now try out new and healthy recipes at home.

Here Are Some Rainy Season Snack Ideas To Help Satisfy The Cravings.

1 Aloo Toast Sandwich:

Peel and boil 2-3 medium potatoes with salt for 10 minutes and mash them. Heat two teaspoons oil in a pan and on low heat fry half a teaspoon each of turmeric and chili powder, cumin (jeera) seeds, mustard seeds and 4-5 curry leaves. Fry for one minute or till seeds start crackling. Mix well into mashed potato. Spread on bread and make a sandwich. Toast it in a sandwich toaster or on a frying pan. Cut into two triangles and enjoy your hot aloo toast sandwich with ketchup.

2 Baked Veg Pakoras:

To make this hot snack for rainy season, you will need one potato, two carrots chopped into small pieces, ½ cup peas, ½ cup each of chopped French beans and capsicum (red, yellow, green). Boil all the veggies with salt and spices until cooked (10 minutes). Let them cool and then mash partially leaving some pieces intact. Form into balls, coat with breadcrumbs and brush lightly with oil. Bake for 10 minutes at 200 degrees Celsius till golden brown. Eat while hot.

3 Sweet Potato Chips:

Sweet potato is the healthier option for potatoes, and you can make delicious chips with them. Slice five or six sweet potatoes into discs that are about 5mm thick. In a frying pan heat 1 tablespoon oil and evenly spread it all over the pan. Place the slices on the pan and cook for a minute on each side reducing the heat a little. Place the fried slices on paper towels to let the oil drain. Sprinkle salt, chili powder and chaat masala on the chips and enjoy.

4 Sweet Corn Cups:

Sweet corn makes a tasty and healthy monsoon snack that can be enjoyed in many ways. Boil or steam two cups of sweet corn with ½ teaspoon salt for 10 minutes. Drain the water and keep the corn in the vessel. Serve in cups or bowls and use any of these toppings: plain melted butter, butter and grated cheese, chopped onions, lime and chili powder.
