The second wave of the कोविड-19 pandemic is spreading rapidly across the length and breadth of the country. This has made preventive measures such as social distancing, frequent hand washing, and wearing masks important, now more than ever.

Types of COVID-19 masks
Wearing a mask protects both the wearer and the people around them. There are primarily three types of masks:
1 Medical Masks
Medical masks are surgical masks that protect the wearer from contact with germ-containing droplets and sprays. The World स्वास्थ्य Organisation (WHO) recommends these medical masks for healthcare workers, patients diagnosed with कोविड-19 or someone taking care of patients with the disease. People above the age of 60 years or with comorbidities are recommended to wear a medical mask. This mask has the ability to filter out large particles from air while the wearer inhales.
2. N95 मास्क
an N95 मास्क is a type of respirator, considered more protective as it filters out both small and large particles when the wearer breathes in. Since N95 respirator mask is in short supply, they should ideally be reserved for the frontline workers. It is the best mask for COVID-19.3 Cloth Masks
Cloth masks are made of multiple layers of tightly woven cotton fabric and can be used daily. They trap the respiratory droplets released while the wearer talks or sneezes, from getting through your mask or escaping from it.4 Layered Mask
WHO’s recommended fabric mask material involves three layers. The inner layer in contact with your face should be a hydrophilic material like cotton, which easily absorbs droplets from your exhaled breath. The middle layer can be a filter made of non-woven polypropylene. The outermost layer should be a hydrophobic material, a fabric that repels droplets and moisture. This can be made of synthetic material such as polyester or a polyester and a cotton blend.
Upgrade your everyday mask
With double and triple variants of कोविड-19 spreading, more protection is warranted, even for wearing masks. With minor tweaks, you can upgrade your mask. Tightening the ear loops and buying a mask with a metal clip to secure it at the bridge of your nose goes a long way in safeguarding you against the possibility of getting infected. While an N95 मास्क will provide maximum protection, you can also consider double-masking. Wearing a surgical mask above the cotton mask can reduce exposure. However, don’t layer your mask if it makes it hard for you to breathe.
The ideal way to wear a mask
Your COVID-19 mask will protect you effectively if you:
- Wash or sanitise your mask each time before and after wearing it
- Ensure your mask is properly snug on your nose, mouth and chin, and tied behind your head or over your ear loops
- Don’t touch your mask while wearing it. If you do, wash or sanitise your hands
- Take off your mask without it touching the front of your face
जबकि wearing a mask is the need of the hour, so is physical distance and staying at home. So, be responsible and wear your marks properly to suppress transmission. To strengthen your immune system, check out our tips on फिटनेस और लाइफस्टाइल से जुड़ी बीमारियां on the Activ Living Blog.
N95 respirators are designed to filter out at least 95% of airborne particles, including large respiratory droplets and small aerosols, which can help to prevent the spread of the virus. They are recommended for use by healthcare workers, first responders, and other individuals who are at high risk of exposure to the virus.
